COMMUNICATING MEANINGFUL MESSAGES THROUGH
MUSIC
In a group or classroom setting, the students will
learn a song (or songs) appropriate for their age.
Younger students will focus on delivering the lyrics
and melody with simple dance steps, while older students
will learn to write their own verses to the existing
music and/or create their own dance moves! (in both,
they will be guided to stay within the context of
the song). Once you combine the message and the music,
you've got them hooked! The student's will not only
learn to work together as a group, but also stand
out as they realize their individual talent. Performing
songs live at the end of the workshop, will be our
final goal.
Music Director's comments
As a songwriter, my focus has always been on strong
lyrical content. With regards to children, I think
music should be a learning experience as well as a
joyful one. I want them to feel uplifted and inspired.
I try to capture that in my music and bring it to
the children I teach, offering an alternative to MTV.
As a music teacher for the last 15 years, I have
watched children grow through both practice and performance.
Recent reports indicate that students' reading and
writing skills have improved through music studies. This
new level of confidence allows them to express themselves
and discover who they are as a person. Watching children
blossom through music has been a very rewarding experience
for me, both as a teacher and as a musician.
As Music Director of Fort Greene Music Scene and
writer/producer for the KOOLKIDZ™ over the past
10 years, I have had the opportunity to work with
many children or varying talent and ability. It is
always fulfilling to bring them together through song
and dance. Singing songs with positive messages connects
the kids to the audience, and they leave the stage
with a feeling of accomplishment.
